Haryana Develops World’s Largest Safari Park in 10,000 Acres
  • The Haryana government will develop the world’s largest jungle safari park, covering 10,000 acres of Haryana Gurugram and Nuh districts in the Aravalli range.
  • This proposed jungle safari park is 5 times more in size than the Sharjah safari park in the United Arab Emirates(UAE), which is the largest curated safari park outside Africa. The Sharjah safari park, covering about 2,000 acres, was opened in February 2022.
  • The Jungle safari park is a joint project of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the Haryana government.
Bayer Crop Science Partners with SFAC to Form 50 FPOs
  • The Small Farmers Agri-Business Consortium (SFAC) and Bayer Crop Science Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to form and promote 50 specialized Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs).
  • In collaboration with SFAC, Bayer will set up 50 FPOs and it already has recognized clusters in 10 states that help the smallholder farmers in enterprise planning, identification of key enablers, creation of market linkages, and data switch.
World Vegetarian Day 2022 – October 1
  • World Vegetarian Day is observed annually around the planet on October 1. It is a day of celebration established by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977 and endorsed by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978, “To promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism.”
  • World Vegetarian Day marks the beginning of Vegetarian Awareness Month, which begins on 1st October and concludes on 1st November, World Vegan Day.
International Coffee Day 2022- October 1
  • International Coffee Day (ICD) is annually observed across the globe on 1 October to promote and celebrate coffee drinking and to spread awareness about the stakeholders in the coffee industry.
  • International Coffee Day (ICD) is celebrated by the International Coffee Organisation (ICO), the 77 member states of the ICO, and dozens of coffee associations from around the globe.
  • About the International Coffee Organisation (ICO): The International Coffee Organization was established in 1963 when the first International Coffee Agreement (ICA) entered into force in 1962 for five years, and it has continued to operate under successive Agreements negotiated since then.

World Habitat Day 2022 – October 3
  • The United Nations (UN)’s World Habitat Day (WHD) is annually observed across the globe on the first Monday of October to highlight the importance of habitat for mankind and to remind people that they are responsible for the habitat of future generations.
  • The WHD 2022 was observed on 3rd October 2022.
  • The theme for World Habitat Day 2022 is ‘’Mind the Gap. Leave No One and No Place Behind’’.
Wildlife Week 2022- October 2 to 8
Wildlife Week in India is annually observed across India from 2 – 8 October to promote the conservation and protection of animal and plant life.
The campaign was organized to spread awareness about flora and fauna and encourage people to save wildlife.
The main objectives of Wildlife Week:
  • Awareness of the protection and conservation of wildlife.
  • To make the people aware of the importance of wildlife conservation.
  • Set up additional services to protect wildlife.
  • Discuss all issues related to the protection and preservation of wildlife.
World Animal Day 2022 – October 4
World Animal Day (WAD) is annually observed across the globe on October 4 to create awareness about improving animal welfare standards across the world.
  • World Animal Day is a global initiative for animal rights that aims at ensuring better standards for animal welfare.
  • The mission of WAD is to raise the status of animals to improve welfare standards around the globe.
  • The theme of World Animal Day 2022 is ‘Shared Planet’.
  • In 1931, International Animal Protection Congress (IARC) approved World Animal Day in Florence, Italy.
MoU signed between DA&FW and NAFED to promote Millet based Products  
On October 4, 2022, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DA&FW) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) in New Delhi (Delhi).
  • Under this MoU, both entities will raise awareness and promote Millet-based products, on the sidelines of the International Year of Millets (IYOM)-2023 celebrations proposed by the Government of India to the United Nations (UN).
  • DA&FW works under the aegis of the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW).
  • Key Points: i. Both entities will build support, organize, promote, market, and forge effective market linkages for millet-based products to maximize millet-based commodities across India.

Scientists of ICAR-NBFGR Discovers New Catfish Species – Pangasius Icaria
  • Scientists at the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have discovered a new catfish species of the genus Pangasius, named Pangasius Icaria from matter dam, Salem, Tamil Nadu (TN).
  • It was discovered by a group of scientists from NBFGR led by Kuldeep K. Lal, director of the Fish Genetics Resources Centre under ICAR.
  • About the species: i. The fish is known among the local people as Aie Keluthi in Tamil and as Eyegirlu in Karnataka.
India Becomes World’s Largest Producer, Consumer & 2nd Largest Exporter of Sugar
  • For the Sugar Season (October–September) 2021–22, a record amount of more than 5000 Lakh Metric Tons (LMT) of sugarcane was produced in the country, making India the largest producer, consumer, and 2nd largest exporter of sugar in the world.
  • Of these, 35 LMT of sugar was channeled to the production of ethanol, while 359 LMT of sugar was produced by sugar mills.
India’s first petrol-operated drone ‘DH-Agrigator’ get DGCA approval; MS Dhoni launches ‘Droni’ Camera Drone
  • India’s first petrol-operated drone namely ‘DH-Agrigator’ has received ‘Type Certificate’ from the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) which enables the manufacturing and selling of drones in the market as per need.
  • It has been designed and manufactured by the Ambattur, Chennai (Tamil Nadu) based students’ startup Daksha Unmanned Systems (DUMS) Private Limited.
Himachal Pradesh Launches New Scheme HIMCAD to Help Farmers
The Himachal Pradesh government has launched a new scheme under the state sector called ‘HIMCAD’ to bridge the gap between irrigation potential generated and irrigation potential utilized.
  • This scheme will offer end-to-end connectivity for farmers’, allowing for better water conservation, crop diversification, and integrated farming.
  • The most recent data indicates that around 80% of Himachal Pradesh’s agricultural area is rain-fed.
  • The State Technical Advisory Committee has approved 379 completed Minor Irrigation Schemes worth Rs. 305.70 crores under the scheme to offer CAD activities to 23,344 hectares of Cultivable Command Area (CCA) by March 2024.
World Food Day 2022 – 16th October
  • United Nations(UN)’s World Food Day is annually observed across the globe on 16th October to focus on the millions of people across the globe who cannot afford a healthy diet and to highlight the need for regular access to nutritious food.
    The theme of World Food Day is “Leave no one Behind”.
PM inaugurates PM Kisan Samman Sammelan 2022 at Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi
On October 17, 2022, the Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi inaugurated PM Kisan Samman Sammelan 2022 at Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in New Delhi, Delhi. It saw the participation of more than 13,500 farmers and around 1500 Agri Startups from India, and the launch/release/inauguration of the following initiatives:
I. The PM released 12th installment amount of Rs. 16,000 crores under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).  So far, eligible farmer families have received benefits worth more than Rs. 2 lakh crore under PM-KISAN.
ii. The PM also inaugurated 600 Pradan Mantri Kisan Samruddhi Kendras (PM-KSK) under the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers (MoC&F). This scheme will convert the retail fertilizer shops in India into PM-KSK in a phased manner.
 

Ayurveda Day 2022 – October 23

 
Ayurveda Day is celebrated on the occasion of Dhanwantri Jayanthi or Dhanteras, the festival of the Hindu god of Ayurveda, Dhanvantari.
  • “Dhanteras” is made up of 2 words “Dhan” which means wealth and “Teras” which means “13”. The day is observed on the 13th day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashwin as per the Hindu calendar.
  • The theme of Ayurveda Day 2022 is “Har Din Har Ghar Ayurveda” (Ayurveda Everyday, Ayurveda Everywhere (AEAE)) which aims to propagate the benefits of Ayurveda to larger and grass root community.
