Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM)

About Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) Scheme

The Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) is an Indian government scheme that is a part of the National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technology (NMAET). The goal of the SMAM scheme is to increase the availability of modern farm equipment to farmers and farmer groups, particularly small-scale and subsistence farmers, who may not have the resources to purchase equipment on their own. The Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) was launched in 2014-15 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, GOI.

The scheme provides financial assistance to farmers for the purchase of equipment such as power tillers, tractors, transplanters, and other modern farm machinery. The financial assistance is provided in the form of subsidies, with the amount of subsidy varying depending on the state and the category of the farmer. The scheme also provides training to farmers to help them use the equipment efficiently and to ensure that the equipment is used to its fullest potential.

The specific objectives of the SMAM scheme are:

  1. To increase the availability of modern farm equipment to farmers and farmer groups, particularly small-scale and subsistence farmers, who may not have the resources to purchase equipment on their own.
  2. To increase productivity and efficiency on farms through the use of mechanized equipment, which can reduce dependence on manual labor and improve working conditions for farmers.
  3. To promote the use of modern, energy-efficient, and climate-resilient farm equipment and technology, which can help farmers adapt to changing weather patterns and reduce their environmental impact.
  4. To support farmers in precision farming by providing access to appropriate machinery, promoting the efficient use of inputs, and also minimizing environmental impact.

The SMAM provides financial assistance to the farmers for the purchase of equipment such as power tillers, tractors, transplanters, etc. The financial assistance is provided in the form of subsidy, the amount of subsidy varies for different states and the categories of farmers. The farmers are also provided with training for the efficient use of the equipment and to ensure that the equipment is used to its fullest potential.

Overall, the SMAM scheme is designed to promote the use of mechanization in agriculture in India and to improve the livelihoods of farmers by increasing productivity and efficiency on farms, reducing dependence on manual labour, and promoting the use of modern equipment and technology.
