World Food Safety Day 2023

World Food Safety Day 2023: Food Standards Save Lives

Every year on June 7th, World Food Safety Day is observed. The object of World Food Safety Day is to promote awareness about the importance of food safety and to encourage people to take precautions to avoid foodborne illness.

Foodborne disease is a huge public health issue around the world. Every year, one out of every ten people becomes ill as a result of consuming tainted food. Foodborne disease can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, and abdominal cramps, among other symptoms. Foodborne disease can result in hospitalization or even death in severe situations.

There are numerous steps that can be taken to avoid foodborne disease. Some of these things are:

  • Hands should be properly washed with soap and water before and after handling food.
  • Getting food to the right temperature.
  • Separating raw meat, poultry, and fish from other foods.
  • Food should be refrigerated as soon as possible.
  • Preventing cross-contamination of raw and cooked meals.

By following these simple steps, we can all help to make food safer for ourselves and our families.

World Food Safety Day 2023’s theme is “Food Standards Save Lives.” Food standards are rules that govern the production, processing, and management of food. They contribute to the safety, wholesomeness, and suitability of food for human consumption.

Governments, international organizations, and industry groups set food standards. They are founded on scientific evidence and are intended to safeguard public health. Food standards can aid in the prevention of foodborne illness by ensuring that food is prepared in a clean and sanitary environment, is free of hazardous bacteria and other pollutants, and is appropriately labelled.

World Food Safety Day is an important occasion to promote awareness of the importance of food safety and to encourage people to practise safe food handling. We can contribute to make food safer for everyone by working together.

Here are some other food safety tips:

  • Purchase food from trusted vendors.
  • Food should be properly stored.
  • Food should be disposed of correctly.
  • Food allergies and intolerances should be avoided.
  • Food should be thoroughly cooked.
  • Fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed.
  • Prevent cross-contamination.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen.

Role of HACCP in Food Safety

HACCP, or Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points, is a system for identifying, assessing, and controlling food safety concerns. It is a preventative approach to food safety that focuses on preventing rather than detecting foodborne illness after it has occurred.

Seven principles of HACCP:

  1. Conduct a hazard analysis
  2. Determine the critical control points (CCPs)
  3. Establish critical limits
  4. Implement monitoring procedures
  5. Implement corrective actions
  6. Implement verification procedures
  7. Establish a system for keeping records
