What is Fair And Remunerative Price (FRP)

Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) is the minimal price at which sugar mills must acquire sugarcane from farmers. The Central Government of India determines it based on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).

The Sugarcane Control Order, 1966 governs the payment of FRP across the country. It requires payment within 14 days of the cane’s delivery date.

The price paid to farmers for cane under the FRP system is unrelated to the profits made by sugar mills.

FRP is based on the rate of cane recovery.

Significance of FRP

FRP is an important policy instrument that is critical in protecting sugarcane farmers’ rights, ensuring sustainable sugarcane farming, stabilizing the sugar market, and fostering social and economic development in rural regions.
