Diseases of Plum

Plum is a popular fruit crop in India, grown for both domestic consumption and export. Plum has different species, but in India, mainly Japanese plums are commercially cultivated and originated in China. In this blog, we mentioned the important diseases of plum that affect plum production.

1. Plum Pocket

Causal organism: Fungus; Taphrina maculans.

Symptoms

  • On fruits, the symptoms are more severe.
  • The afflicted fruits have whitish circular spots on them and are totally covered. Infected fruits double in size.
  • Fruits that have been infected do not generate seeds.
  • In rare situations, a yellowish covering forms on the leaves, and defoliation ensues.

Management:

  • Before bud sprouts spray sulphur or copper fungicide.

2. Plum Leaf Curl

Causal organism: Fungus; Taphrina deformans.

Symptoms

  • Disease first manifests itself in early spring, when the leaves begin to open.
  • Leaf blade thickens, the midrib turns yellow, and the leaf curls.
  • the affected leaf takes on a reddish-purple tint.
  • leaves and petiole have both curling.

Management:

  • The disease is controlled by a dormant spray of Bordeaux mixture (6:10:100) with an adhesive or sticker and a winter spray of Bordeaux mixture (1.2%) before the bud burst.

3. Bacterial Canker

Causal organism: Bacteria; Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae.

Symptoms

  • Disease damages the trunk, limbs, shoots, fruit spurs, blossom, dormant buds, leaves and fruits.

Management:

  • Aerial spray of Streptocycline @ 0.5g/litre.

4. Bacterial Leaf Spot

Causal organism: Bacteria; Xanthomonas syringae pv. pruni vauterin.

Symptoms

  • Commonly occurs in the seedling stages in the nursery.
  • leaves become turn yellow and drop.

Management:

  • Aerial spray of Streptocycline @ 0.5g/litre.

5. Plum Mosaic Virus

Causal organism: Virus; Mosaic virus.
